Comics journalism: Human biometrics database in Kenya prevents people from getting passport
Our latest non-fiction graphic report is based on research by Keren Weitzberg, a senior lecturer in the School of Politics and International Relations and a fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen Mary University of London. The artwork is by Kenian comic artist Maddo. The story explores the problem of a biometric database, set up by the UNHCR, that labels people as refugees, preventing them to get the Kenyan nationality, even if they are Kenyan:
The protagonist problem in cartoons
We have written before about the lack of women cartoonists. Our first editorial on this, by US cartoonist Jen Sorensen, was published 13 years ago. Sadly, the profession is still very much skewed towards men. Gender inequality also shows in the types of cartoons that are being made, and in the main characters and what role they play in the cartoon. In our latest editorial, we explore harmful stereotyping in cartoons.
New on Saturdays: cartoons about Sudan
We publish an editor's choice from Monday to Friday. In partnership with Khartoon Magazine (a platform for Sudanese cartoonists and comic artists), we will now add the Saturday to our publication schedule, publishing a cartoon about Sudan each week. The first one (shown here) by Ben was published this Saturday.
