Hi there!
A month of highs and lows in the world of cartooning: On October 17, the second annual Cartoons Day took place in The Hague, the Netherlands, where Belgian cartoonist Lectrr won the European Cartoon Award 2024. Meanwhile in Gaza, a young cartoonists was killed by Israeli bombs hour after posting her last cartoon. And in Egypt, cartoonist Ashraf Omar has been in prison for almost 100 days, awaiting trial.
Also in this newsletter, an update on our latest projects and events and our most popular cartoons. As always, thanks for your continued support and do consider also subscribing to our daily cartoon newsletter (if you haven’t done so already).
Lectrr wins the European Cartoon Award 2024
This year’s European Cartoon Award goes to Belgian cartoonist Lectrr for his cartoon of Russian opposition leader and political prisoner Alexei Navalny. The two runners-up are cartoonists Tjeerd Royaards (Netherlands) and Victor SolÃs (Mexico). Honorable Mentions were awarded to Elena Ospina (Colombia) and Peter Kuper (United States).
You can see all the cartoons on our blog as well.
The award was presented during European Cartoon Day ceremony in The Hague, The Netherlands. The European Cartoon Award, started in 2019, is dedicated to supporting and promoting political cartoons in Europe. Here’s an impression:
Palestinian cartoonist killed in Israeli air strike
From the high, we go to the low: Mahasen al-Khateeb was a talented young (31 years) Palestinian digital artist with a big following on social media. She was killed by an Israeli air strike in Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza last week, after posting her final artwork about 19 year old Shaban al-Dalu, who burned to death in a hospital bombed by Israel.
Education Cannot Wait
Education Cannot Wait is the UNICEF-hosted global fund dedicated to supporting access to quality inclusive education for children caught in the world’s worst humanitarian crises. To support the global advocacy campaign #AfghanGirlsVoices our cartoonists made cartoons to raise awareness about the plight of Afghan girls who are not allowed to go to school. See all the cartoons on our project page.
Upcoming events and projects
On November 7, CM editor Tjeerd Royaards will be on a panel at the World Forum for Democracy 2024 in Strasbourg with Turkish cartoonist Zehra Ömeroğlu (currently facing trial in Turkey for one of her cartoons), Italian cartoonist Emanuele Del Rosso and all-round humor expert Alberto Godioli (Associate Professor at the University Groningen). The panel is organized by Cartooning For Peace and will focus on the question how we can use cartoons to fight populism and protect democracy.
In other exciting news, Cartoon Movement is official partner in DELIAH: Democratic Literacy and Humour, a project funded by the European Commission that will run between 2025 and 2029, involving six universities around Europe who will conduct research into the role of satire in Europe. We’ll share more details about the project in one of our upcoming newsletters.
